The Malaysian Dependent Pass, also known as the Dependent Visa for Malaysia, allows foreign citizens to bring their family with them to Malaysia if they are there for employment or study.

However, not every holder of an employment or student pass is able to bring family members to Malaysia. There are also restrictions on which family members you may bring.

It makes studying abroad more difficult when you miss your family. Low-cost options for overseas students include bringing their families.

Eligibility criteria

You may bring your dependents with you provided you meet the following requirements:

  • A Category 1 Employment Pass holder (in a key role in the company and with a monthly salary of at least RM10,000).
  • A Category 2 Employment Pass holder (in a managerial and professional position in a company and with a monthly salary between RM 5,000 and RM 9,999).
  • A holder of the Malaysia Student Pass who is pursuing Master’s and Ph.D. studies at a Malaysian academic institution.

Employment Pass Category 3, Temporary Employment Pass, and Professional Visit Pass holders are not permitted to apply for Dependent Passes for their family members.

Student Pass holders who are enrolled in a BA program or below or a language school are not permitted to apply for a Dependent Pass Malaysia for their families.

All postgraduate students, both public and private, are able to apply for dependent permits on behalf of their families.
