About UKM

The National University of Malaysia, also known as Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in Malay, is a public university that is situated in Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia’s Hulu Langat District. In addition to having a branch campus in Kuala Lumpur, its teaching hospital, the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC), is situated in Cheras.

In an effort to preserve Malay as a language of learning, nationalists created UKM Malaysia. The author Abdul Kadir Adabi proposed the idea of a national university in 1923 as a protest against British colonialism. Malay intellectuals of the period were inspired by this nationalist trend, but they were suppressed by the British. The nationalists remained steadfast, and in 1969 the movement once more flourished. A Sponsoring Committee was formed to draught a report urging the founding of UKM, and its chairman was the intellectual Malay Syed Nasir Ismail. Dr. Mohd Rashdan Haji Baba, who later became UKM’s first Vice-Chancellor, and Dr. Mahathir Mohamed (Tun), Malaysia’s fourth prime minister and at-the-time minister of education, are also notable members of this committee.

On May 18, 1970, 192 undergraduate students were welcomed into the temporary campus of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in Jalan Pantai Baru, Kuala Lumpur, which housed the Faculties of Science, Arts, and Islamic Studies. UKM relocated to its current facilities, which make up the main campus in Bangi, in October 1977. The campus is located in the metropolitan area that includes the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Kuala Lumpur, the main business district, and Putrajaya, the administrative capital, and has a total area of 1,096 hectares (2,710 acres). The distances from KLIA, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya to the UKM Bangi Campus are 45 km (28 mi), 30 km (19 mi), and 12 km, respectively.
