School of Humanities

School of Humanities, founded in 1970 at USM under the name Center for Cultural and Humanities Studies, is one of the oldest literary study institutions. Along with the School of Comparative Social Sciences and the Center for Educational Services, it was founded to bring depth and balance to the USM curriculum by emphasizing liberal literature. The programs provided at these study centers demonstrate that the academic curriculum at USM does not emphasize science and technology at the exclusion of other elements of human existence. The philosophy underlying the emergence of literary study centers such as PPIK is to equip students with a fundamental but in-depth understanding of the primary characteristics of society, culture, and thought in Southeast Asia, as well as how external elements influence or have an impact on the country’s original cultural roots.
