About USM
University Science Malaysia (USM), in Malay Universiti Sains Malaysia, founded in 1969 as the nation’s second university, was formerly known as University Pulau Pinang. USM relocated from its interim locations at the Malayan Teachers’ Training College, Bukit Gelugor, to the current 416.6-hectare campus at Minden in 1971. Minden is located around 9.7 kilometers from Georgetown.
USM provides courses in the social sciences, humanities, and education in addition to natural sciences, applied sciences, medical and health sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, and building science and technology. Around 30,000 students can enroll in these at the undergraduate and graduate levels at its 17 Academic Schools on the main campus in Penang, at 6 Schools at the Engineering Campus in Nibong Tebal (about 50 km away), and at 3 Schools at the Health Campus in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan (approximately 300km from the main campus).
Additionally, USM has 17 specialized research centers for a variety of fields of study, including molecular medicine, science and technology, Islamic development and management studies, policy research, and international studies. Other areas of study covered by these centers are archaeology, medicine and dentistry, and molecular medicine. The University’s commercial branch, USAINS Holdings Sdn Bhd, also offers consultation, testing, and advising services to the industry.
To guarantee that its students are multi-disciplined through their exposure to various areas of study by other Schools, USM has always used the School structure rather than the conventional Faculty system. Given the variety of organizations and societies offered, it also encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities.
Vision and Mission
Their mission is to Change Higher Education for a Sustainable Future, which is also their vision. USM is a pioneering, transdisciplinary, research-intensive institution that helps the bottom billions to improve their socioeconomic well-being.
USM Campuses
Main Campus (Penang)
USM Main Campus: The’soul’ of USM, it is the big brother of all five campuses. Founded in 1969 as the country’s second university, it was formerly named as University Pulau Pinang. In 1971, USM relocated from its interim location at the Malayan Teachers’ Training College, Bukit Gelugor, to its current 416.6 acre campus on Minden, Penang Island. It presently offers a variety of courses, the most of which are in the arts and sciences. The Main Campus has long been considered as a sight to see, as the entry point to a world-class educational experience.
Engineering Campus
USM Engineering Campus: Situated on mainland Penang in Transkrian, Nibong Tebal, it provides a variety of Engineering degrees. Its location provides a tranquil and calm setting for a high-quality learning atmosphere in a natural setting. The contemporary and futuristic architecture and arrangement of the structure and its setting emphasize its significance and distinctiveness. This campus is very notable since it is the sole institution of higher learning (IPT) in this area, which is still considered rural.
Health Campus

USM Health Campus: Situated on Malaysia’s East Coast, the Kubang Kerian, Kelantan town is known for its chaos, but it also provides a variety of health courses and training for future physicians and practitioners in the country. The site opened in June 1983 to accommodate the Hospital University Science Malaysia (HUSM).
AMDI Campus
AMDI Campus: This is one of USM’s main wing campuses, and it offers some of the top medical services in the region. It delivers medical education and services while leading the world in new revolutionary discoveries toward sustainable and holistic healthcare delivery. AMDI, with its objective of “developing state-of-the-art advanced research, conducting innovative postgraduate programs, and delivering tertiary healthcare services towards sustainable mankind,” already shines in the region with its many accomplishments.
KLE Campus
Belgaum, Karnataka Lingayat Education (KLE) Campus: It is about to enter its centennial year, marking the day “Seven Committed Teachers – The Saptarishis” founded an Anglo-Vernacular school in Belgaum. Despite several obstacles, their determination in building KLE is a remarkable narrative in and of itself. The type of growth that KLE has made over the years from a school to an international program, including instruction in nearly all fields of human knowledge, is unprecedented in India’s educational history.
USM Schools and Research Centers

USM provides faculty and students with educational and research possibilities as a Research Intensive University designated by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (MOHE) in 2007. In addition, USM made history in 2008 when it was chosen as the first university in Malaysia to take part in the Accelerated Program for Excellence (APEX), a fast-track initiative that aids higher schools in becoming world-class.
