Faculty of Civil Engineering
UTM was founded to teach Technical Assistants for the Department of Railways, Survey, and Public Works of the Federated Malay States, in accordance with the evolution of the civil engineering faculty. UTM was founded in 1904 when the Treacber Technical School began training Technical Assistants on Weld Road (now Jalan Raja Chulan).
Sir Donald Mac Gillivray, the British High Commissioner, oversaw the school’s official opening on 1 March 1905, after it had been raised to Technical College status. One of the Diploma-level courses provided by the college was a Diploma in Civil Engineering. In March of 1972, His Majesty DYMM Yang Dipertuan Agong declared the establishment of Institute Technology Kebangsaan (ITK) in accordance with section 5 (1) of the University and University College Act of 1971. On April 1, 1975, the institute’s name was formally changed to University Technology Malaysia, marking a major turning point in its history. In 1972, the Department of Civil Engineering evolved into the Faculty of Civil Engineering, which was established in 1975. The faculty began as a college before becoming an institution and then a faculty.

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
Formerly known as the Fakulti Kejuruteraan Jentera, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME) of University Technology Malaysia (UTM) is now known as the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME) (FKJ). It was established up in 1975 at University Technology Malaysia Kuala Lumpur campus. The Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Petroleum Engineering were FKJ’s original departments. A Dean, assisted by a Deputy Dean and two Heads of Departments, administered the Faculty. The Department of Petroleum Engineering was enlarged on March 15, 1983, to create a new college known as the Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering. In June of 1989, FKJ moved to a new campus in Skuutai. The University has agreed to rename FKJ on the 20th of December 1995 to Faculty Kejuruteraan Mekanikal (FKM) or Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME) in order to make the Faculty more marketable worldwide. Under UTM Synergy 4.0, FKM was put under the control of the Faculty of Engineering (FE) in July 2018, along with the other five Faculties. The name of FKM was changed to the School of Mechanical Engineering (SME).
