About UTM
A renowned public institution in Malaysia with a focus on research, the University of Technology Malaysia (UTM) is placed 203rd globally in the QS University rankings.
In Malaysia, technical education has a century-long tradition. It all started in 1904 when a technical school opened on Weld Road (now Jalan Raja Chulan) to train technical assistants for the departments of railways, survey, and public works in the Federated Malay States.
Treacher Technical School was the official name of the institution, after Sir William Treacher, the time’s resident general.
Part-time students attended classes while working and received training that was tailored to the technical requirements of their jobs.
The Skudai campus’ abundant greenery serves as the fertile foundation for UTM’s continued progress and inspiration.
In January 1991, the Centre for Humanities Studies received a new faculty rank and changed its name to the Faculty of Management & Human Resource Development. The Humanities Centre’s Department of Islamic Studies separated into its own organization and changed its name to the Centre for Islamic Studies and Social Development. In January 1994, the Faculty of Education was formed.
Other faculties continue to develop their undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well as construct a number of centers of excellence for research and teaching, in addition to these new enterprises.
